Welcome to the web site of Tim Pigott-Smith. Tim graduated in Drama from the University of Bristol, in 1967. He now holds the position of Special Lecturer in the Department of Drama. He went on to train at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and began his professional acting career at the Bristol Old Vic in 1969. He was recently honoured by Leicester University and Bristol University with a Doctor of Letters.

He has worked extensively in regional theatre, has toured the UK, first with Prospect in the early 70's, and more recently with his own company, Compass - taking major productions to the regions. He has played leading roles with both the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Royal National Theatre. His West End theatre includes Michael Frayn's Benefactors, and Mr Rochester in Jane Eyre. He played Larry Slade in The Iceman Cometh at the Almeida and The Old Vic (1998), and on Broadway (1999). His most recent stage appearance was as Henry Higgins for the Peter Hall Bath season, and a National tour of Pygmalion.

He is well known for his appearances on television - The Lost Boys, Angelo and Hotspur for the BBC Shakespeare series, Francis Crick in Life Story and The Chief. His award-winning performance as Ronald Merrick in The Jewel in the Crown brought him international recognition. He has filmed all over the world - Clash of the Titans, Escape to Victory, Remains of the Day.

He has directed major productions: Royal Hunt of the Sun for a National tour (1989), Hamlet in Regent's Park (1994), and small-scale - winning a Fringe First for his contribution to adapting Samuel Beckett's Company for the 1988 Edinburgh Festival.

Tim is a regular broadcaster, with many audio-books to his credit, and one published book - Out of India - an anthology based on his own and other people's writing about India. He is married to actress Pamela Miles. They live in Highgate and have one son, Tom, a solo violinist.
